Million Dollar Baby
If you haven't seen the film, Million Dollar Baby yet, read no further and go see it.
I saw this film just recently on DVD and bawled my eyes out like a little girl. This is Eastwood's best film, his best acting and it was certainly the best picture of the year. It goes without saying that it was Hillary Swank's best performance ever, too. I went into this film knowing absolutely nothing about it (I prefer to watch films this way, if possible) and was completely blown away. Egad. I get misty just thinking about it.
If you've seen it please tell me I'm not alone ....

I would recommend it, but man it was.....emotional.. So no you big ol' softie you are not alone *hands you a tissue ( a pink one)*
Since we are on the topic of movies....
I watched Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy last night.... All I can say is WOW
I think that just maybe the lamest movie I have ever seen aside from Shaun of the Dead.....

This is by no means a flame... just simply my opinion. Suicide, assisted or otherwise, is nothing but a selfish choice... THE most selfish choice a person can possibly make. I'm sure there are many who disagree, and I respect your position. But that's just how I feel about it. A person in that situation is thinking of nothing but themselves, and taking what THEY perceive to be an easy way out. What they need is a little more love from their fellow human beings, not a cheap "way out".

Yeah. I always liked the BBC low-budget miniseries. Somehow the low budget works well with the campy nature of the books. When I heard there was going to be a Hollywood version of it I felt like it was going to be a big mistake.
You've just confirmed it for me.

I did not mean to ruin anything for ya Muffin..... I just would not subject anyone to the 78 minutes of literal mind numbing hell I suffered....To be quite honest they LOST a great deal in translation from the book to the movie... It I believe is one of the worst book to movies I have ever seen.....
I found myself glad that I did not pay for the damn thing...

Believe it or not, I agree with you 100%. Personally I can't stand the glorification of people like Kavorkian.
Part of me was resentful that this film might be the forerunner of a Hollywood trend to promote assisted suicide - on that count, by all I believe, I was prepared to get really offended.
A couple of things probably would have tipped me over to hating the film on principle alone:
If they made the priest character less sympathetic - or if they framed him like a buffooon
If there was a moment where someone stood on a soapbox to make some statement about assisted suicide
If the film tried to underscore a message that Eastwood's character did the right thing - I'm glad they kept it ambiguous.

I saw Million Dollar Baby on a plane to the states, where I was sitting next to what seemed like a terrorist (had the whole durka durka style going for him, was sweaty and nervous, had something that sounded suspicious in his carry-on etc.). So as you can see, my concentration was somewhere else, but what I did see of the movie was lame and boring. So the woman with man muscles gets owned, falls in love with an old guy and wants to kill herself. Big deal.

Aracos, having dealt with that issue greatly, I will agree with you...but you must also realize that sometimes there are people that you can not reach no matter how hard you try.... You can lead a horse to water...etc....
Sometimes it is not LOVE from other people that they are lacking....but rather the love of themselves... It took me a LONG time to realize that if you can not love yourself then there is nothing anyone can say or do to make that better, it is something you must learn on your own, and unfotunately some people never realize it at all. Suicide in any aspect is highly selfish, in aspects of religious reasons...and just pure humane reasons. You can love someone with all of your heart, and they can know and feel that love, but if they do not love themselves from the start, your love can not bring them back.. You have to know love to experience it... ~~~~Not flaming, just wanted to say that I agree with your thoughts, just had some of my own~~~

I respect that opinion, but let me go ahead and voice a rebuttal for the other side.
If you are terminally ill, such as the recent Shaivo case or this movie, I believe it is your right to decide to continue life sustaining treatments or not. Now I do not see this as being selfish choice, but then again that is my opinion. I would think it is selfish for other people to decide what to do with my life. This is why its important to get things cleared away in case something like this happens. In the unfortunate case of Terry Shaivo she did not have that cleared away.
The main point is to make sure to have in writing on the procedures to be done on yourself, if an unfortunate event should occur. That way the people that DO wish to be on life support may, and those that choose not to may have their wish too.
Back to the off topic topic, great movie!

I have many things I can say about Schaivo and the way the case was portrayed. But, since we're starting to tread into dangerous territory, let's leave Terry out of this and keep it a friendly discussion about a film.

I have a bio medical ethics research paper with alot of statistics and research at my house too. I just thought that since one side was approached it may be best to illustrate the other side. Either way I also would agree that the approach the film took was very well done.

It's personal preference I suppose. I go to the movies to get away from the real world. If I had known that the movie had a sad ending I would have left it alone.

That's fine. I'm a practicing physician with both direct experience and personal interest in end of life issues. So it would be impossible to start a discussion on this topic and expect my part to be brief or less than comprehensive. And a complete discussion is well beyond the scope of this post, these forums and most people's interest.

Interesting to see another practicing physician that plays GW. I would have to agree that most people would probably not like to see either of our discussions, and that is probably fortunate. If you do not mind though I am highly interested to hear your direct experiences and or thoughts behind this topic. I am an open mind and just want to learn a bit more for my future practices as well. Im going into a family practice and studying at the UT health science center.

To be kind, this is a highly sensitive issue among anyone with a heart. This topic can well be debated until the cows come home and noone will feel any better about it.. So the best thing to do is agree to disagree and give each other hugs.
We are all highly intelligent people with working brains...which automatically means we all have different opinions about most everything relating to the jacked up world we currently live in.... That being said (((((((((HUGS)))))))))
